The Power of Your Mindset

You know those big dreams you have? I mean the embarrassingly big ones, the ones you may not even admit to yourself.

What if I told you that there is only one factor that is going to make them come true or not? It’s not money or education or even experience. It all comes down to our mindsets.

Deep down, do you believe that your dreams are possible? That even the setbacks are happening for reason? And that above all, you deserve success?

I know this can sound a little woo woo, but the more I achieve in my life and career, the clearer this concept becomes.

When I first launched my freelance writing career, I knew NOTHING. I had never written anything other than nursing research papers for school. I had no time, because I was a new mom working fulltime and in grad school. I didn’t know anyone else who worked from home or if it was even possible. And I wasted A LOT of time worrying that this dream was not truly possible. I knew that it was possible for some people, but it just seemed so far away for me.

On those tough days when it felt like I was never going to get there, a few strategies helped keep me on track.

How to get your mindset tight and right

Read success stories

There is nothing more motivating than hearing real success stories with real heros. Men and women who started with nothing and built their way up to the top. Read biographies, listen to podcasts, and watch Youtube interviews. Do whatever you have to to remember the fact that your dream is real and achievable. Real-life examples will keep you motivated when you want to quit.

Remember why you started

In my day-to-day life, it’s very easy to get taken down by the details. I get caught up in launch schedules and social media posts instead of focusing on what program I want to launch and who it is going to help.

When you’re starting to feel overwhelmed by it all, come back to the basics. Why did you launch your business or freelancing career? What do you want your life to look like in 5 years? Hold on to that vision and don’t let the little crap take you down.

Live like you’ve done it

The fastest way to achieve your dreams is to behave as though you already have. Imagine that you are already working from home, already having 5-figure months, already traveling the world.

Why are you doing this work? Is it to be more present for your kids? Then get very clear on what that means and start now!

Plan that family vacation together - even if you can’t afford it yet, you can still start a Pinterest board, research hotels, and cut out pictures.

Do you want more time with your spouse when you’re not both stressing about money? Plan a date night. It could be a quiet night in with Chinese and House of Cards. Or you could try something new. My husband and I are taking our first tennis lesson this week, because it’s important to me that we make time for fun together. Behave as though you are successful, and your reality will quickly catch up.

Ditch the timelines

This is a hard one for me. As a nurse, we always learned about SMART goals - specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, timely. Every goal should have a clear deadline to keep you accountable. However, when you’re an entrepreneur, it’s impossible to predict the future. And I’ve learned that most goals take way longer than you think. It’s really discouraging to see your “deadline” come and go when you haven’t achieved your dream yet. However, that doesn’t mean that it’s not on its way!

Just remember that your timing is perfect, and everything is happening for a reason. As long as you’re taking steps forward everyday, you’re on time.
